HERRIMAN – Athlos Academy of Utah received approval on Friday from the Utah State Board of Education to open a new charter school for the 2016-2017 school year. In August, the school received unanimous approval from the Utah State Charter School Board.
“We are really excited to bring this innovative new school to students and parents in Herriman and the surrounding communities,” says Andy Lavin, chair of the Athlos Academy of Utah governing board. “We know that physical activity and learning are inextricably connected, and we will contribute to students’ life-long success by encouraging their development into confident, energetic, and resilient adults.”
Athlos Academy provides a unique approach to teaching and learning. Its mission is to empower students to live fulfilling, responsible, and successful lives by building on three foundational pillars: Prepared Mind, Healthy Body, and Performance Character. Students will participate in daily scientifically-developed physical activity sessions, performance character experiences that are integrated into the curriculum and culture of the school, and benefit from a proven academic curriculum that results in high academic achievement for all students.
The school will initially serve more than 800 students in grades K-8 and be located at the corner of Herriman Parkway and Mustang Trail Way. The 90,000 square foot building will feature state-of-the-art classrooms and fully-equipped indoor physical fitness centers with both hardwood court and turf field space. Each school will employ more than 60 teachers and other support staff.
Charter schools are tuition-free public schools open to all students. Enrollment for Athlos Academy of Utah will begin in January 2016.
